Perm celebrated Victory Day on May 9. On that day, all TV networks showed World War II-inspired films, younger generations honored veterans, and the festivities culminated in a military parade at Perm’s October Square.
Many Perm citizens attended a local military parade and watched the fireworks at night on Victory Day. Among official guests were Cllr. Cook from Oxford and Alec Renny, British vice-consul in Ekaterinburg.
Most surviving witnesses of World War II wore their medals as they headed to the parade. Lots of children gave flowers, mostly red carnations, to veterans in the street. Officials laid wreaths at the war memorial sites. Concerts and performances, featuring wartime songs and poetry, took place at various venues in Perm.
Victory Day marks Germany's surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945. It became the end of the Great Patriotic War for the USSR, which lost more than 26 million citizens in the four years of fighting.
